Anne Ane Pete Sibley Concert at Half Moon Saloon

HALF MOON SALOONFor Anne and Pete Sibley, it is the simplicity of the music: the words, the vocals, the harmonies. The storytelling and intimate nature of their original songs has drawn fans and encouraged the husband and wife duo to keep delivering. They aren’t afraid of making music that is personal, paring it down, staying true to their instincts.Raised in New England singing in choirs, studying all types of music except folk and bluegrass, Anne and Pete stumbled upon their true calling when they moved west to Jackson Hole. They consider folk and bluegrass the people’s music, nature’s music, and they sing it freely and graciously. In April 2009, the Sibleys took top honors in the ‘Great American Duet Sing-Off’ on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. This prestigious accolade has helped launch them onto the national music scene.Anne and Pete have recorded four well-received albums, including one for Christmas. They celebrated their newest release, Coming Home, in April 2009. Of the album Will You Walk With Me, music journal Bluegrass Now writes, “What emerges front and center are the couple’s transcendent harmonies, vocal renditions that embellish already artful songwriting.” CD Baby raves, “this duo is bound for greatness, with their stripped-down but stunning original songs and choice covers.”Part of the Peggy Dicken Schwer Memorial Fund Concert Series this winter, presented by the Arts Council of Big Sky. All concerts are $40, and the cost includes dinner and the music. Call 995-2742 for tickets or visit www.bigskyarts.org for more information. Each event starts at 5:30 with a social/cocktail hour, with dinner seating at 6:45 and the concert at 8 p.m.

Ophir School Pie Auction

Back to where it all began… It’s been 30 years since Ophir parents, teachers and faculty held the first Ophir School Council Pie Auction at Buck’s T-4. The Pie Auction returns to Buck’s on Saturday, February 20th at 7 p.m. “Before the gymnasium at Ophir was built, we were the gathering place for school events, shows, sports and the first Pie Auction,” said Chuck Schommer, of Buck’s T-4. This is the largest fundraiser of the year for Ophir School Council. The event, which began as a simple auction of homemade pies to raise money for incidental expenses at Ophir is now the number one fund-raising event for the school and provides the bulk of the funding necessary to pay for the ski and swim programs, field trips, classroom supplies, artists in residence and more. It is no understatement to say that many of the special programs which make Ophir what it is would not be possible without the funds we raise at the pie auction,” says OSC President Katie Alvin. “Of course, the pie auction is a fund-raiser, but it isn’t only a fundraiser. It is also a chance to come together and celebrate what makes Big Sky so great. And that’s the community—with the school as its heart.” This year’s event will feature the traditional elements - silent auction, live pie auction, and raffle - but new this year will be the chance to kick up your heels during the post-auction Promenade. This will be a great opportunity to dress up, whether that means dressing for a prom past or present, or simply wearing those nice clothes you never get to wear in Big Sky. Whatever you do, dont miss the seasons best date night opportunity! Admission to the Pie Auction is free, but there will be plenty of ways to support the OSC. Come ready to buy pie, one-of-a-kind student art, or any of the great local goods and services donated by this generous community. PIE AUCTION RAFFLE TICKETS ON SALE NOW Buy a chance at a Big Sky Ski Pass, Lone Mountain Ski Pass, Skate skis, Downhill Skis, or Free Gas! Ophir School students have begun the sale of the pie auction raffle tickets and dinner tickets, a critical part of the schools largest yearly fundraiser. Raffle tickets are $20 for five tickets or $5 each. All proceeds go toward supporting essential school programs. This years raffle tickets offer purchasers a chance at a number of items any ski town resident or visitor could use: A 2010-2011 Seasons Ski Pass at Big Sky, donated by Big Sky Resort, a downhill ski package (skis, poles, and footbeds), donated by Lone Mountain Sports, East Slope Outdoors and Grizzly Outfitters, A Lone Mountain Ranch Season Ski Pass and his and her Madshus skate skis, donated by Lone Mountain Ranch and Gallatin Alpine Sports and a $250 Conoco gas card plus four oil changes, donated by the Conoco and Mountain Mobile Oil Change. Everyone cant make it to the pie auction, but many people still want a chance to contribute. The raffle ticket sale offers a way for everyone to get a chance to help the school--and get a chance at some very nice rewards, says Ophir School Council President Katie Alvin. Typically, the raffle ticket sales account for about a fifth of our proceeds. Winners are announced at the pie auction, and raffle tickets may be purchased before and during the auction. You do not need to be present to win. The nice thing about the raffle is that even if you dont win, you still get to know that you helped our kids win, says Alvin. Raffle tickets went home with Ophir Students on January 18th; they are also available for sale through the school office at 995-4281 x200.

Inspire the inner god or goddess within and join us for a greek bash! The hardest part of a toga party is the toga part. No one knows what to wear, how to wear it, or where the outfit stops and they begin. Here are a few tips:Sheets aren’t the best choice (especially used sheets—yuck!). You will need 4-5 yards of fabric per toga, so find a local fabric store and go crazy.Be creative and pick a fabric that screams your personality. It can be a solid color or have your favorite licensed character dancing across it. That’s up to you!Once you have your fabric, you’re ready to do the wrap. Wrap around your waist several times and then throw the remainder over either shoulder covering your chest (you choose). Take the fabric hanging off your shoulder and bring it around your back to your waist and tie it off. You can choose to go bare shouldered or to wear some type of t underneath.Accessorize with leather straps (to match your sandals), gold chains, jewelry, ivy covered wire for your headdress, gold belting. The community ice skating rink is up and running at Fire Pit Park in the Big Sky Town Center and this year we are adding themed skating nights.
4th Annual Big Sky Big GrassFebruary, 12,13,14 2010Big Sky Resort, Big Sky, Montana 59716Venues: Carabiner Lounge, Summit Upper Lobby, Whiskey Jack, Missouri BallroomConfirmed Acts:The Travelin’ McCourys (Missouri Ballroom Saturday 2/13 9:30pm) **$25 with Infamous Stringdusters and Crooked StillThe Travelin McCourys: Ronnie McCoury on mandolin, Rob McCoury on banjo, Jason Carter on fiddle, and Alan Bartramon bass , with featured guests on guitar and vocals, is the latest incarnation of the most awarded band in the history of bluegrass -The Del McCoury Band. Known for their individual prowess on their instruments and their rapidly expanding reputation as collaborators with the members of numerous musical icons from Vince Gill to the Allman Brothers and Phish, this touring unit blends the best of the Appalachian tradition with the improvisational magic of jazz. Unique live collaborations are the hallmark of their performances, and demonstrates why critics and musicians across the country hail them as the best bluegrass band in the world. As part of the Del McCoury Band, The McCourys have appeared on the Grand Ole Opry stage countless times, in turn earning themselves a spot on the Grand Ol Opry Tour in 2004. They were also on the Down from the Mountain Tour in both 2001 and 2002. They have been nominated for 6 Grammys, winning 1 for Best Bluegrass Album in 2006 and were named International Bluegrass Music Associations Entertainer of the Year 8 times. They have performed, recorded or toured with the likes of Phish, Warren Haynes, Steve Earle, Yonder Mountain String Band, Vince Gill, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels, Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart, Nanci Griffith, the Chieftains, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, moe, David Grisman, and on the list goes on!Infamous Stringdusters (Whisky Jack Friday 11pm – Missouri Ballroom Saturday 7:30pm) The Infamous Stringdusters are the new vanguard of acoustic music. Well crafted songs, vivid arrangements, instrumental virtuosity, stunning improvisation, unique individuality and complete harmony… Bluegrass, Rock, Country, Blues, Folk, and Jazz, the “IS” is American Acoustic Music. ’ Fork in the Road was named Album of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. It’s title named Song of the Year, and the band itself earned the honor of best emerging artist in a competitive field. Crooked Still (Whiskey Jack Friday 9:30pm – Missouri Ballroom Saturday 6:30pm)Crooked Still is now on the cusp of a new musical chapter. The quintet became five with the addition of fiddler Brittany Haas and Tristan Clarridge on cello and second fiddle. With Haas and Clarridge, the band has proven themselves to be even more adventurous, breathing their cosmic fire into old songs.O’Donovan says. “Brittney adds another female presence to the band; I can hear my voice in her fiddling. Tristan has a refined cello tone, with a powerful, restrained energy. They bring a fresh outlook to the arrangements that keeps the music exciting.Bearfoot (Whiskey Jack Saturday 2/13 11pm)Bearfoot is an Anchorage, Alaska-based band that met while they were counselors at a bluegrass camp for children and teens. They do not consider themselves to be a bluegrass band because as they somewhat jestingly say, they could not find a banjo player among their Alaskan contemporaries. Like many of youthful bands influenced by bluegrass, they have taken some of the sensibilities and spirit of the music and blended it with traditional music and their own perspective as songwriters. The vocals are mostly handled by the newest band member, Odessa Jorgensen. Her voice has a sultry cheerfulness, but if she sang the blues she would sound a lot like Lucinda Williams.
Right in the heart of the Big Sky region lies the Big Sky Town Center, a remarkable master-planned commercial and residential development that has been designed to provide a sense of place for the area’s residents and visitors. The Town Center is a centrally-located, pedestrian-oriented village core that will serve as the hub of activity for the many year-round recreation opportunities that Big Sky has to offer. The businesses and residences being built in the Town Center are part of the “downtown” fabric of Big Sky. Let us share our vision for the future – you may find yourself wanting to be part of this incredible area and this incredible endeavor. The Town Center is a 165-acre, mixed-use project located at the intersection of all key development in Big Sky -- Ousel Falls Road and Lone Mountain Trail (Big Sky Spur Rd.). Approximately 50 acres is zoned for commercial uses, and 115 acres is zoned for homes and condos. The project has been approved for approximately 500 residences, including 120 condos above the commercial district. An estimated 375,000 square feet of commercial space has been approved, including 36,000 square feet for civic uses such as a performing arts center, emergency medical facilities, community center, and more. Finally, about 150 lodging rooms will be available in the Town Center. With about 25% open space, trails, and parkland, the Town Center’s development philosophy is sensitive and responsive to the outstanding natural values of the region. Reaching outward from town into the surrounding mountains, access to Ousel Falls Trail will invite exploration and will provide additional marketability for the residents and businesses of Town Center. The goal of creating a walkable community with sidewalks, tree-lined boulevards, trails, and services near the residences has been the defining feature of the plan from the beginning. In the early 1970’s after Chet Huntley announced that his plans for Big Sky included a Meadow Village and a Mountain Village, Bob Simkins and Jim Taylor bought the Sappington Ranch, which contains a part of the Town Center project. Master Developer Simkins Holdings, LLC has been actively working on securing the development rights for the project since the late 1990’s, and the first infrastructure projects were completed in 2001. The momentum for the project has continued to increase over the past few years, and now that the project is about 18% built out, it’s beginning to take on a life of its own, as many residents find it a very desirable place to live, and business owners find it a profitable place to open up shop. The heart of the plan is Town Center Avenue (“Main Street,” if you will) where most of the commercial lots are located. In the middle of Town Center Avenue is a Town Plaza that will likely feature an ice skating rink during the winter, and plenty of room for small festivals and performances in the summer months. The Plaza and Town Center Avenue will be the hub of activity currently absent in Big Sky and will be the destination attraction that draws visitors from around the country. The first projects along Town Center Avenue are in the design and permitting process and should start construction soon. Simkins Holdings, LLC has taken great care to ensure that the individual project developers in the Town Center will be able to move forward with their building projects in a relatively short time frame by having secured the necessary zoning and entitlement approvals in advance. The commercial core of Big Sky is as close as a few blocks away, accessible by sidewalks from the many residential units being offered. Restaurants, shopping, cafes, a movie theatre, grocery stores, and many other services are either available now or planned for the near future, and the Town Center amenity package will continue to expand every year. Town Center is probably the most desirable place to live because the lower elevation of the meadow receives about 60% less snowfall. The milder climate means Spring comes earlier, Fall stays later, and the Summer lasts longer than on properties on the Mountain. All of this creates more opportunities for year-round recreation right from your doorstep in Big Sky. Beautiful trails, fly-fishing, hiking, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, and, of course, the world famous winter experience, are only a few of the Big Sky opportunities immediately available in the Town Center! We invite you to learn more about the Big Sky Town Center at www.bigskytowncenter.com, or by phone at 406-586-9629.

Live, Work, and Shop in Town Center

The core village of Big Sky is coming! Big Sky will improve on its rankings and comparisons with other similar resort areas when a dense downtown village with ample shopping and dining opportunities is finally constructed. So many other western resorts evolved after the mining boom had already built a downtown core, but Big Sky is different. Because Big Sky didn’t grow from the early mining boom/bust cycles, we now have the opportunity to build a town from the ground up – a downtown with a grocery store, coffee shops, a movie theatre, countless boutique shops, a wide variety of restaurants and bars, and of course a bustling nightlife. The businesses in the Town Center have greatly exceeded their expectations after opening their doors in the project. Ken Lancey, co-owner of Grizzly Outfitters, said recently, “Moving to the Town Center has brought us significantly more foot traffic. We feel this is definitely the place to be now and even more so in the future.” This praise for Town Center is shared by Jackie Robin, co-owner of the Hungry Moose Market and Deli, “We love our new location in the Town Center of Big Sky. It’s central, convenient for locals and visitors, and simply a great spot for our retail business in this growing community.”These businesses and more than 20 others make the Town Center a unique and desirable place to live. With services so close, residents can enjoy their morning walk to ”The Moose” to pick up a paper and a cup of coffee, or have breakfast while working on their computer in the deli. The Town Center is also approved for about 120 residential condos to be located above the shops along Town Center Avenue, the project’s “Main Street.” One of the first projects to propose this type of residential use above the commercial core in the Town Center is the Water Tower Place building offering whole ownership of their limited offering of four residential condos above Town Center Avenue. While this is one of the first projects to offer this type of property in Big Sky, it is very common among other resort towns and traditional downtowns. People are social beings and naturally want to be around other people and close to the services and amenities that give the area a sense of place. The condos in the residential district are located close to the commercial services to encourage walking along the sidewalks and trails. The Town Center has been designed as a very pedestrian-friendly community with tree-lined boulevards, slightly narrower streets to calm traffic, and pedestrian crosswalks. The project has a very ‘human scale’ to it that is unique to the area. The street/building interface along Town Center Avenue has been designed to function like an “outdoor room,” with canopies overhead, ample sidewalks with a heated paver surface to enhance the wintertime strolling experience, and trees along the edge of the street to help provide a comfortable and inviting setting for pedestrians. These thoughtful designs for the project have begun to show themselves in the first ”neighborhood commercial” phase around Lone Peak Drive, but will be more fully appreciated in the next ”commercial core” phase along Town Center Avenue. We encourage you to take a look at the Town Center for the value of the residential properties compared to similar mountain properties. Experienced buyers and investors recognize the value that the Town Center offers, and we invite you to learn more at www.bigskytowncenter.com.
