About La Cense: A Kindred Spirit…A Lifelong Bond La Cense Montana is deeply committed to raising and educating registered Quarter Horses in accordance with their natural instincts, behavior and “language.” Employing the La Cense Method of horsemanship, we offer finely trained recreational riding horses. Our principles are evident in the horses’ calm, confident and trusting manner. A La Cense horse embodies the spirit of the West: the freedom, the strength, the beauty, the ruggedness and the romance. Raised on the open range and trained in harmony with their true nature, these horses are prepared from the very beginning to become ideal riding companions.
La Cense hand selects these horses for strength and temperament. We look for calm dispositions and responsiveness, as well as strength and beauty. Hand picked from proven breeding stock, these horses were foaled and raised in a natural herd environment.
The horses come to La Cense as “untouched” two-year-olds, having had minimal contact with humans. Starting them properly at a young age ensures that they never form bad habits that would be difficult to break later. After a brief introduction to natural horsemanship education, they are freed to roam the 88,000 acre ranch for an entire year as they grow.
A working cattle ranch with several thousand head of Black Angus, La Cense provides the young horses with an invaluable opportunity to mature in a rich and varied environment. Across the ranch’s flat and mountainous terrain, the horses become familiar with rocks, boulders, badger holes, creeks, bridges and other obstacles they are likely to encounter later in recreational riding. Such exposure makes your La Cense partner confident and calm in outdoor situations.
When the La Cense horse is offered for sale as four-year-olds, they are sensitive, responsive and solid, and ready to build a meaningful partnership with you. They will be offered for sale only after they are evaluated in the arena and on trails, both alone and in groups. They must meet numerous benchmarks for skill and behavior, including easily loading into all types of trailers, confidently crossing water and bridges, and remaining calm during shoeing, bathing, clipping and other grooming tasks. They must demonstrate composure by not getting “spooked” by loud noises, cars and farm equipment. The result of this patient, natural training process is a great riding horse.
La Cense Montana has achieved recognition as a leader in natural horsemanship, dedicated to teaching both horses and humans. With the goal of educating the next generation of natural horsemen, La Cense and the University of Montana-Western in Dillon partnered to create the nation’s first bachelors program in natural horsemanship. La Cense Montana has also entered into an educational partnership with the American Quarter Horse Association to produce the AQHA Fundamentals of Horsemanship Steps 1 & 2, a series of training manuals and DVD’s based on the La Cense Method. This is a unique program designed to teach people to teach horses, and represents decades of experience in the art of horsemanship. It is produced by a team of dedicated professionals, all of whom share a love of horses and a genuine passion for developing an unrivalled process for educating them.
