Town Center Enhances Pedestrian Safetywritten by Big Sky Town Center RATE THIS ARTICLE (Current Rating: 0)
BOOKMARK & SHARE A facelift was given to a stretch of Ousel Falls Road last week when a paint striping crew added pedestrian crosswalks, a double yellow centerline, designated on-street parking areas, and adequate loading area for a bus stop.
With the addition this winter of The Goode Place, the first commercial building on the east side of Ousel Falls Road, people now have a reason to cross Ousel Falls Road to eat at the Huckeberry Café or WokKee Mountain Kitchens, or to visit MT Chiropractic & Sports Medicine or Everlands’ new Big Sky office. The Town Center recognized the need to add crosswalks to help accommodate the many people shopping and dining in the Town Center.
To help raise driver awareness of the growing commercial district, the Town Center added two solar-powered flashing beacons and pedestrian crossing signs this winter, and last week they added a small temporary sign in the middle of Ousel Falls Road to remind drivers that state law requires them to stop for pedestrians in crosswalk areas.
Since Ousel Falls Road was constructed ten years ago, construction workers and others have driven through the Town Center area at higher speeds because there was not much around other than the sagebrush. However, over the past several years, and especially in the past six months, more buildings have sprung up and people are now crossing Ousel Falls Road for the first time. The construction and hauling trucks coming down into the Town Center need to slow down now that they are entering the busy commercial and residential districts.
This past January, the Town Center submitted a petition to Gallatin County to reduce the speed limit on Ousel Falls Road from 35 mph to 25 mph, but the County Road Department asked them to re-submit their application in the summer after more of the Town Center was developed. After the paint striping was completed last week, the Town Center will re-submit a new speed limit reduction petition to the County to reduce the speed limit along the Town Center stretch of Ousel Falls Road, and they also hope to gain approval for two 15 mph Park speed limit areas in front of Fire Pit Park, plus the stretch of road in front of the new Morningstar Learning Center site. If the County approves their application, new signage will be installed immediately, and the County Sheriff will be asked to enforce the new speed limits.
