On Monday March 1, the day after the world watched the nail biting Canada vs USA Olympic hockey final, over 60 people showed up at Choppers to express their support for getting a full-size ice rink in Big Sky. Even four-time Stanley Cup winner Marty Pavelich was there to get everyone fired up about hockey!
Most of the interest was from hockey players and broom ball enthusiasts, a few figure skaters, and plenty of recreational skating interest. Additionally, there’s a lot of expertise in the group for coaching, fundraising, rink maintenance, construction, etc.
It looks like there’s enough interest and help available to start some type of Big Sky hockey and skating association, which will begin soon.
This summer, the Town Center will be building a 20’x24’ pavilion/band shell to accommodate the Arts Council’s free Thursday night summer concerts (at the corner of Ousel Falls Road and Aspen Leaf Drive, south of the new Bluebird Café). With this improvement, the Town Center will level a 200’x100’ site in front to be used for the ice rink in the winter. The site will have a water supply, power, and lights. Additionally, it may be possible to ‘wrap’ the inside of the pavilion like a canvas wall tent to use as a heated warming hut to dress.
